A 71-year-old man died Wednesday night after he was hit while trying to cross U.S. 17 at Wells Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The man, who is from Fleming Island, was trying to cross the northbound lanes of U.S. 17 and stepped into the path of a pickup truck, troopers said.
The 55-year-old man driving the truck wasn’t able to stop and hit the pedestrian, who died at the scene, FHP said.
The driver, who is from Jacksonville, was wearing a seat belt and was not hurt, according to the report.
