Main Street Bridge reopens to drivers after tugboat crash; maritime traffic remains restricted

The Main Street Bridge in Downtown Jacksonville reopened on Tuesday morning after a tugboat crash closed the bridge for hours, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

Just before 7 a.m., FDOT said the bridge reopened to vehicular traffic following a “thorough assessment” by FDOT crews. However, officials said maritime traffic will remain restricted until repairs are completed.

“Due to the specialized nature of the components, it could take several days to complete the repairs,” an FDOT spokesperson said.

Around 2:30 a.m., the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the bridge would remain closed for at least six hours for repairs.

According to FDOT, a tugboat struck the bridge and damaged electrical components needed to lift the structure. For that reason, the bridge is locked in the down position to allow safe use by drivers.

The bridge’s closure came just a few days after it reopened on Friday after being closed for a week due to repairs.
