A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 14-year-old in Oakland Park, authorities said.
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, shortly after 5 p.m. Monday, deputies responded to the 5400 block of Northeast Third Avenue following reports of a stabbing.
Cellphone video from outside the home showed deputies and rescue crews arriving to the neighborhood.
Oakland Park Fire Rescue also responded and found JD suffering from stab wounds.
First responders could be seen rushing to the home with a stretcher while deputies had someone in custody, who was placed into a BSO cruiser shortly after. Deputies did not confirm if this person was the teen that was arrested.
“They began rushing a kid out on a stretcher who was covered in blood in a compression suit and they were trying to do CPR on him,” said Akyra Gulley, a neighbor.
D was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives determined the 16-year-old suspect was responsible for the stabbing, which stemmed from a verbal and physical altercation, investigators said.
Several area residents told 7News they were saddened by what happened but aren’t surprised it happened at the group home.
“It’s very sad, we’re all really sad for the kids and what’s happened, but we also have been on high alert against them because we have had so many issues already,” said a resident who did not want to be identified.
Neighbors said the home has served as a group home for the past two years, with kids moving in and out frequently.
They said they’ve had some serious concerns about the facility, telling 7News threats have been made toward them, in some cases forcing deputies to respond to the home often.
On Tuesday, video showed a biohazard team entering the home to clean the interior and even placing caution tape over the front entrance.
Neighbors said there might’ve been signs something terrible was about to happen and they hope this sparks the group home to be shut down so the kids could be moved somewhere else to get better care.
“I hope that it is shut down and those kids are placed in a legitimate home where people are actually taking care of them and monitoring their wellbeing. There’s a lot of mental distress going on there. I don’t think that the people who are running the group home are doing it because it’s what they should be doing,” said Gulley. “It’s very heartbreaking especially seeing the past two weeks, he was very distressed and it seems like he knew something bad was gonna happen.”
“I’m concerned about the children and the care that they were in. I’m concerned about the cops, the number of times that they were brought out here and what they’re able to do,” said a neighbor.
The victim’s mother told 7News off camera that she wants justice for her son and she believes the system failed him.
The suspect has since been taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center for processing. His identity has not been publicly released.
He faces one count of first-degree murder.
