Man in critical condition after Miami officer fires weapon in Liberty City: Police

A man was critically injured after he was shot by a Miami Police officer during an armed encounter in Liberty City on Monday morning, officials said.

The incident began around 6:45 a.m. when officers received a ShotSpotter alert in the area of Northwest 15th Avenue and 64th Street, Miami Police Chief Manny Morales said at a news conference.

They also received a 911 call that a man dressed in black and armed was walking southbound on 15th Avenue opening fire, Morales said.

Officers responded and at least one officer fired their weapon at the man, police said.

Miami Fire Rescue said that the man suffered from several gunshot wounds and was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. His identity has not been released.

“I can tell you that we’re reviewing some evidence right now, I can tell you that we do have video from our real-time crime center from a camera that was across the street,” Morales said. “We do have the bodyworn camera of the officers and the initial investigation reveals that there’s a firearm that is on the scene that does not belong to any of the officers.”

The incident prompted a large law enforcement response, and officers were at the scene all morning. Three evidence markers could be seen on the ground next to bullet casings.

A woman told NBC6 that police identified her son as the suspect.

“He had a gun and they was trying to tell him put the gun down, and then the confrontation and then he got shot,” Cynthia Williams said about her 37-year-old son, Joseph. “I can barely even hold it together, because I just lost my husband, and I’m going through a lot of problems.”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is expected to take over the investigation, which is standard whenever there is a police-involved shooting.
