Driver allegedly hits pedestrian with car and leaves her with broken leg

A Wildwood man has been tracked down after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with his car and leaving her with a broken leg.

On Thursday, Aug. 28, an officer learned of a hit-and-run crash resulting in a woman sustaining serious injuries, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. There was debris left by the suspect vehicle, later found to be driven by 33-year-old FLS.

Video footage from the Cube Smart Storage, located at 1435 Center St., in the crash area showed a white sedan hitting the pedestrian after she ran into the roadway. She was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition.  She was ultimately taken to the Intensive Care Unit with a severely broken leg, the report said.

Using a license plate reader system, the officer confirmed the vehicle was a white Nissan Altima. He found several prior police contacts with the vehicle from various agencies, showing S was the usual driver. As such, he began canvassing areas where S was known to reside, including Woodland Boulevard, the report said.

On Aug. 29, the officer spotted the vehicle backed into the driveway of 2116 Woodland Blvd. It had significant damage to the front right bumper and headlight, consistent with the parts found at the scene. As the officer stepped out of his vehicle, S got out of the Altima and approached him to talk, the report said.

S denied any knowledge of the crash and did not know who was driving the vehicle. The officer still planned to tow it as evidence, making him nervous. He began pacing and persistently asked to get his things from the vehicle. The officer said no, and he left the area shortly after the tow truck arrived, the report said.

The recovered pieces from the vehicle were a perfect match to the Altima seized as evidence. A later search of the vehicle revealed 11.5 grams of marijuana, $5,357 in cash and four cell phones. As of the time of the report, law enforcement is waiting for permission to search the phones.

This past Friday, the officer spoke to the registered owner of the Altima who was unaware of the situation. She came to the LPD to take back her vehicle, and S was with her. He was asked to sit down for an interview, during which he was hesitant and made statements that seemed to want officers to simply blame him for the incident, the report said.

The officer explained he was not at fault for the collision, and he did not want him to admit to the crash if he was not involved. S then stated he was driving from one girl’s place to another. He believed he struck a dog or raccoon and was unaware he hit a person, the report said.

S was subsequently arrested on charge of accident (leave scene with serious injury). He was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $2,500 bond.
