Pickup driver killed in Brevard County rollover crash after speeding through red light, troopers say

A 49-year-old Cocoa man driving a pickup truck was killed Wednesday evening after speeding through a red light on U.S. Highway 1 in Brevard County and crashing into another car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 6:34 p.m. at Blacks Road near Cocoa.

According to a crash report, a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup was heading north on US-1 and failed to slow down for stopped traffic, swerving and continuing through the intersection when it was a red light. Witnesses told troopers the driver was speeding.

A 2019 Nissan Sentra in the southbound lanes attempted a turn at the same time the pickup had entered the intersection, troopers said. The front of the pickup collided with the front of the Nissan, causing the pickup to run off the roadway and hit a pole, according to the report.

The pickup truck overturned several times before ending up on its roof.

The pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the crash report, the Cocoa man was not wearing a seat belt.

The Nissan driver, a 45-year-old Cocoa woman, was uninjured.

An investigation is ongoing.
