A 20-year-old man is dead after being hit and killed by a car while standing next to his disabled vehicle on U.S. 92 in Volusia County, the FHP says.
According to troopers, it happened Sunday just before 9 p.m. on U.S. 92 near Red John Drive.
The 20-year-old was reportedly standing next to his disabled Ford F-250 with a trailer attached in the westbound travel lane of U.S. 92, blocking the outside lane.
As a result, troopers say a 67-year-old driver hit the 20-year-old man standing in the lane.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver who hit him was not injured.
The crash is under investigation.
If you are ever stopped on the side of the road, law enforcement officials recommend you turn on your emergency flashers and headlights and, if possible, move the car as far to the right-hand shoulder as you can.
The FHP says staying inside your vehicle may be safer than standing next to it, especially at night or on a busy interstate.
As for drivers passing, Florida’s Move Over Law requires drivers to change lanes or slow down when they see a stopped or disabled vehicle on the side of the road.
