Tampa man killed after dump truck erupts in flames during crash: Florida Highway Patrol

A 62-year-old Tampa man died Thursday after authorities said he was unable to escape from his vehicle following a fiery crash in Sumter County.

The crash happened shortly after 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of CR-48 and SR-471, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 62-year-old had been traveling westbound on CR-48 in a sand-filled dump truck.

As he reached the intersection, the dump truck driver made a wide right turn onto SR-471 and crossed into the path of a Rooms-To-Go furniture truck, officials said.

The driver of the Rooms-To-Go truck, a 41-year-old Lakeland man, crashed into the dump truck, and troopers said both vehicles erupted into flames.

Authorities said the Lakeland man escaped from his vehicle with minor injuries. However, the Tampa driver was unable to do so and died at the scene, according to officials.

No further information was immediately available.
