Scooter rider killed in crash with garbage truck in Fort Lauderdale

A person riding a scooter was killed Saturday morning in a crash with a garbage truck.

Earlier in the morning, authorities closed the intersection of State Road 84 and South Federal Highway.

Fort Lauderdale police said officers responded around 8 a.m. to the 2400 block of South Federal Highway. The scooter rider was pronounced dead at the scene by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.

“Due to a fatal crash involving a scooter, the intersection of State Road 84 and S Federal Highway is currently closed. Drivers should seek alternate routes,” Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Traffic homicide investigators are handling the case, and no further details about the crash or the victim have been released.

Motorists are being diverted while police continue their investigation.
