A deadly crash involving two vehicles shut down State Road 46 in Sanford after a driver struck a guardrail before falling onto the roadway below, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just after 10 a.m. on Monday.

Preliminary reports indicate a 2008 Honda Accord was traveling eastbound on Interstate 4, approaching the State Road 46 overpass. For reasons unknown, the Honda driver ran off the roadway to the left, striking the median guardrail. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn onto SR-46, where it collided with a Mercedes that was stopped in the eastbound left turn lane, troopers said.

The Honda driver, an adult male whose identity is pending, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Mercedes driver, a 21-year-old woman from Sanford, was not injured and remained on scene. troopers said.

Footage of the crash taken by Trooper Steve Montiero shows the overturned Honda and the damaged Mercedes.

The Seminole County Fire Department confirmed the closure in all directions shortly after the crash. Emergency responders are on the scene working to assist those involved.

Sanford police issued a traffic alert advising that the stretch of west SR-46 from Towne Center Boulevard to Wayside Drive is closed to all traffic. Westbound travelers on SR-46 from Towne Center Boulevard can only access the eastbound on-ramp to I-4.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until the roadway reopens.
