Suspect leads authorities on chase on I-75 in Alachua County; traffic delayed

Authorities say a high-speed chase on Interstate 75 ended when the suspect crashed in Alachua County on Wednesday evening.

Alachua County Sheriff’s officials confirm the fleeing suspect drove off the roadway and crashed near the Alachua/Columbia County line.

Traffic was delayed on I-75 as emergency crews responded to the scene. All lanes have since reopened.

Officials tell TV20 that an off-duty Gainesville Police Department officer noticed the driver making gestures to him at a red light that suggested he needed mental health assistance.

When the officer attempted to stop him and provide help, he sped off and entered the interstate.

Authorities conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, and the man resisted. At that time, a dog jumped out of the car.

The suspect then ran out into the interstate, nearly being struck by a semi-truck, and got into his vehicle.

While driving, he veered off the roadway and crashed. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital.
