A woman is recovering after she and her dog were attacked by a pit bull in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday morning.
The incident happened on Northwest 15th Place near 18th Avenue.
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the incident is being handled by Broward Animal Control.
NBC6 spoke with Stephanie Jules, who said she had cuts and scratches on her arm and legs.
“I have a cut on my elbow and then a big cut on my knee,” Jules said.
She said she was walking her dog, a shih tzu named Cookie, when a pit bull attacked them.
“I was walking my dog with my sister, and then as we’re coming down to get back to the house, a big pit bull just runs and just attacks us,” she said.
She said the pit bull bit her dog and had it trapped in its mouth.
“It already picked up my dog and started shaking it,” she said.
Bernice Jules was with her sister when it happened.
“My sister is holding onto the dog, and it’s like almost dragging her down the street,” Bernice said.
Stephanie said the attack happened so fast that she doesn’t know if she was bitten or scratched, and that she just had marks that were left behind.
A neighbor who identified herself as the owner of the pitbull didn’t want to, but waved at NBC6 cameras Sunday morning.
The family said Cookie is being treated for internal bleeding and bruising.
Stephanie told NBC6 off-camera that investigators removed the pit bull and several other dogs from the home after it happened.
It’s the second dog attack reported in Broward County in less than a week.
On Tuesday, investigators said a man was bitten multiple times by two dogs.
At some point, investigators said that one of the dogs tried to attack a deputy who was responding to the scene, forcing the deputy to shoot the dog.
In that case, Broward County Animal Care said the two dogs involved would be euthanized.
For now, Stephanie sent out a message to her neighbors to keep their dogs secured.
“If you’re gonna let your pit bull in front of your yard, that’s your right, but at least have it blocked or something so that it’s not chasing people down,” she said. “You’re not the only person on this street. Other people live here, and other people have animals.”
