Reckless Florida U-Haul driver flips truck, injures motorist, deputies say

Reckless Florida U-Haul driver flips truck, injures motorist, deputies say

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s office said a reckless driver tore through a parking lot and county roads, ramming vehicles and flipping a U-Haul truck on Monday.

SLCSO said dispatchers received multiple calls around 5:15 p.m. that reported a reckless U-Haul truck, forcing vehicles off of a roadway in the Lakewood Park area.

A deputy located the U-Haul truck in a Winn-Dixie parking lot after he noticed the truck’s erratic path that endangered pedestrians and motorists, SLCSO said.

“The driver posed a significant hazard to motorists, forcing several vehicles off the road and creating a serious public safety threat,” SLCSO said.

Deputies said they attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver, Brian Lassonde, ignored emergency lights and sirens, fleeing through traffic.

The U-Haul crashed after colliding with multiple vehicles, striking traffic signs, rupturing a water main and injuring a another driver, SLCSO said.

Body camera footage showed the U-Haul truck flipped on its side as Lassonde attempted to climb through the back windshield per a deputy’s instruction.

According to SLCSO, deputies booked Lassonde into the St. Lucie County Jail, where he remains held without bond pending first appearance.

SLCSO said it arrested Lassonde on suspicion of three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing or eluding that resulted in injury or death and failure to remain at a crash involving serious bodily injury.

“The investigation remains active as deputies work to determine whether Lassonde was under the influence of controlled substances at the time of the incident,” SLCSO said.
