Two people have died after a crash along SR-31 near Bermont Road.
Florida Highway Patrol has shut down lanes in both directions along SR-31 between Bermont Road and the DeSoto County Line for the fatal two-vehicle crash.
Troopers say a 22-year-old man was driving north in a Sedan along State Road 31 when he crossed over the centerline and entered the southbound lane and crashed with a 63-year-old woman.
Both drivers died on the scene.
Troopers say lane closures are expected to last for several hours.
Our team spoke with drivers who often drive on State Road 31. They say drivers are always speeding.
“I see people fly all the time and get very impatient, often trying to pass on opportunities that shouldn’t, shouldn’t be happening,” said Catitlin Gaudinier, “And I feel like that probably contributes to a lot of the accidents that happen and then shuts everything down because there’s no way to get around.”
“You have to be very careful. You’re always afraid someone’s going to hit you because they’re going too fast and there’s a lot of stop and goes,” said Verna Wagner.
Florida department of transportation is working on a 85 million dollar widening project expanding it to a four lane divided highway.
Drivers can expect to see the changes by mid 2027.
