Bokeelia veteran, wife and 2 dogs escape house fire with help from neighbors

Bokeelia veteran, wife and 2 dogs escape house fire with help from neighbors

Flames engulfed a car and spread to a home on Judith Road in Bokeelia around 10 a.m. Tuesday, forcing homeowner Jack Rovaldia and his wife Jan to make a narrow escape.

Rovaldia, a veteran of 36 years, said he is grateful he survived.

Neighbor Jay Nygard recalled the scary scene.

“I was sitting in my room working on the computer in the living room, and I saw a cop go zipping by, sit got my attention,” he said. “Then another one came, and then I looked up and saw the smoke coming out of the house.”

Rovaldia said he had gone downstairs to warm up his car on a cold day. He said he ran upstairs to grab a hat, and that is when he saw smoke coming from his car.

“I went back upstairs to get Jan, my wife, and then it burst into flames,” he said.

The fire quickly spread throughout the house, but Rovaldia praised his neighbors, one of whom ran inside to save his wife and their two dogs. The neighbor was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, but fortunately, Rovaldia, his wife and their pets were unharmed.

“The good Lord took care of us,” Rovaldia said. “We have a lot of faith in him.”

Now, Rovaldia and his wife are figuring out where to stay, but Rovaldia said the community has rallied around them.

According to the Matlacha/Pine Island Fire Control District, the call came in at 9:53 about a vehicle on fire.
