A St. Petersburg man said he is thankful his mom and nephews are safe after their home caught fire on Thursday morning.
The St. Petersburg Fire Rescue said crews arrived at the home on 16th Avenue South and found heavy smoke coming from the roof.
Crews quickly began working to bring the fire under control.
St. Pete firefighters said the cause of the fire is under investigation. However, the family believes the blaze was caused by an electric scooter.
Timothy Snead said his mom was in the front office when she heard a popping noise.
“That’s when she went out and saw all the smoke, because apparently, the scooter caught fire,” Snead said. “It was a lot from such a small scooter. You wouldn’t expect that amount of fire damage to happen.”
Snead shared a warning for other e-scooter owners:
“If you have a scooter or any kind of electrical vehicle, do not keep it inside of the house. Keep it outside,” Snead said. “Be careful with the charging because it happened quick. It went from a small spark, pop noise, and the next thing you know, the whole hallway is filled with dark smoke and you got a big fire on your hands.”
Snead said the family is now focused on trying to repair the home.
“You know, God willing, we’ll be able to fix and repair it, but the damage that has happened is definitely unexpected and definitely a lot,” Snead said.
