A shooting in Indian River County left a deputy, a locksmith and the suspect dead, along with one other injured, the sheriff’s office confirms.
The shooting occurred Friday morning at 1137 Governors Way in Bermuda Club, when three deputies were serving an eviction notice to 37-year-old MH. Officials said Halberstam retrieved a weapon and began firing at the deputies.
Flowers said that Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, 47, was killed in the line of duty. Mashkow served with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office for over 25 years.
Deputy Florentino Arizpe was shot in the shoulder and is recovering at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce. Arizpe was released from the hospital on Sunday afternoon.
Sgt. Gary Farless was at the scene but not injured.
A locksmith who had been present for the eviction, David Long, was also shot. He underwent multiple surgeries and had been in critical condition since Friday. Long died from his injuries at 2:41 p.m. Sunday, according to his niece, Kaitlyn Cerda.
“My uncle was a fun, hard-working man who brought energy and laughter everywhere he went. He cared deeply for his family and worked tirelessly to support the people he loved. He will be missed more than words can say,” Cerda says.
Flowers said H suffered critical wounds before he died Saturday.
“(H) was not someone that was on our radar; this was not someone that we were actively engaged with,” Flowers said. “This was a standard call for service.”
According to deputies, H’s mother had placed seven calls to the home within the past month, which led to her decision to evict him. Halberstam had recently been fired by UPS, and Flowers said that he had been making concerning posts on social media about his past employer and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
Flowers said he is heartbroken by Mashkow’s death, having worked his whole career with her.
“Our team will feel this forever,” Flowers said. “Terri was an amazing deputy. She had a beautiful heart, and she will be missed.”
At about 6 p.m. Friday, Mashkow’s flag-draped coffin was escorted by law enforcement to the medical examiner’s office.
This is the second line-of-duty death in the 100-year history of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
