On one of the busiest travel days of the year, four people were killed in separate crashes across Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, leading state troopers to investigate the incidents and urge caution on the roads.
In Punta Gorda, a pickup truck hit and killed a 73-year-old woman who was crossing the street on Riverside Drive near Fairfield Avenue at sunset. The road is narrow, with trees and homes lining both sides. Troopers cleared the scene and allowed the truck to drive home.
Earlier, at lunchtime, a 17-year-old girl from Immokalee was killed while turning onto Vanderbilt Beach Road from the Island Walk Blvd intersection. Her Jeep flipped upside down into a light pole after she T-boned an 86-year-old driver. Two children in the back seat were hospitalized with serious injuries, while the 86-year-old man was unharmed. Troopers are still determining who had the green light.
At 2:45 a.m., a 32-year-old man from Estero died after rear-ending a dump truck on US 41 North near Whispering Pine Way. Troopers reported the dump truck was moving slowly due to a street sweeper cleaning the road ahead.
At 11 a.m., a 69-year-old man from Naples was killed by a pickup truck while riding his bike on US 41. As he crossed Peters Avenue in the crosswalk, a truck hit him. He was not wearing a helmet.
Troopers continue to investigate these crashes and are urging everyone to exercise extra caution on the roads during the Thanksgiving travel period.
