A Port St. Lucie police officer was rushed to a hospital Monday after being shot while investigating a “disturbance,” officials said.
The incident unfolded in the 11000 block of SW Lake Park Drive in Port St. Lucie. NBC affiliate WESH identified the officer who was injured as Sgt. Erik LeVasseur.
According to police, LeVasseur was one of several officers who responded to the area. They encountered a man with an assault rifle, leading to a shootout in which the suspect and LeVasseur were shot.
Officials said the suspect died from his injuries. His identity has not yet been released.
LeVasseur, who was shot in the face, was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, and was undergoing surgery.
Authorities said no other officers were injured.
The investigation remained ongoing Monday night, and no further information was immediately available.
