An explosion in Eustis injured one person, Fire Chief Michael Swanson said during a news conference on Thursday.

One person was flown to the hospital, Lake County Fire Rescue said.

The victim’s condition is unknown at this time.

Chopper 2 was on the scene where debris and glass were scattered over the parking lot and area roads.

“Please avoid the area of S. Eustis St. from E. Lemon Ave. to E. Orange Ave. and E. Citrus Ave. from S. Grove St. to S. Bay St. due to a structure fire,” Eustis police said on Facebook.

The explosion occurred at a jewelry shop in Eustis.

“The building appears to be a total loss,” Swanson said.

Video shows heavy damage to the building.

There was road and utility work taking place in the area when officials discovered the gas leak.

The building was old, and given the fact that there are no gas lines that they know of running to it, trying to figure out what caused the fire will be challenging, Swanson said.

The Eustis Police Department, the gas company, and the state fire marshal are investigating the cause.

“I heard and felt an explosion,” Said Katie Balic, who lives near where the explosion happened. “I thought they demolished a building,”.

She said she was told to evacuate the area but was able to return home by Thursday night.

“Just the fact that there was no gas line in there and it still exploded on the inside, it just makes me feel very unsettled,” She said.
