The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting.
According to the sheriff’s office, on Thursday night, deputies responded to the HCA Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce after a woman arrived at the emergency room with a gunshot wound in the leg.
The woman was transported to the hospital by her husband. Deputies were able to determine the shooting occurred at a home in the 2600 block of Grey Twig Lane in Fort Pierce.
An initial investigation determined that the victim’s husband placed his firearm on a bench inside the home. The gun was left unsecured and within reach of a 2-year-old child.
According to the sheriff’s office, the child gained access to the gun and squeezed the trigger, which caused the gun to discharge.
The bullet went through a wall and struck the mother in the leg as she was standing in the kitchen washing dishes.
The sheriff’s office has not said if charges will be filed against the husband.
