The Brief
-
- A single-engine plane crash-landed on a DeLand road on Monday.
- Jacobs Road – from Plymouth to Hwy 92 – is closed for several hours.
- FOX 35 has learned that two people were on the plane when it crashed and were both injured.
A small plane made an emergency landing on Monday afternoon at the intersection of Plymouth Avenue and Jacobs Road near DeLand High School, sending two people to the hospital, authorities said.
The aircraft came down around 2 p.m., leaving visible skid marks in the dirt and the plane resting on its side with a door hanging open, according to video from the scene.
What we know:
Police said both people on board the single-engine Cessna were conscious when they were transported — one by air and the other by ambulance.
One witness, William Baith, told FOX 35 News that he saw the plane flying unusually low over the school moments before the crash.
“I saw that it was extremely low … maybe 100 feet above the ground,” he said. “I knew that it was a problem for sure.”
Emergency crews responded with what witnesses described as dozens of fire trucks, police vehicles and other first responders.
Jacobs Road, from Plymouth to Hwy 92, was closed for several hours, while authorities investigated and worked to remove the aircraft.
Second plane crash in Central Florida today
This was the second small plane to crash on Central Florida roadways in the same day.
Hours later, a small plane crashed into the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Brevard County on Monday night, right during the evening commute. That plane struck at least one vehicle, sending one person to the hospital, officials said.
The crash happened around 5:45 p.m. on the southbound lanes of I-94, near mile marker 201, in Cocoa, Florida, a spokesperson for Florida Highway Patrol said.
