State trooper vehicle damaged after getting hit during traffic stop

A state trooper made it out unscathed, but his vehicle did not when it was hit while he was conducting a traffic stop on Thursday.

The Florida Highway Patrol said it happened on Bay Pines Boulevard, approaching Seahorse Drive, which was the scene of a fatal hit-and-run earlier in the day.

Although they happened in almost the exact same spot, the two crashes occurred a few hours apart and were unrelated.

In the latter crash, a state trooper had conducted a traffic stop on a Ford E250 van, driven by a 75-year-old Pinellas Park man.

Despite the trooper’s Dodge having the emergency lights activated, a Jeep Cherokee traveling east on Bay Pines failed to yield and collided with both stopped vehicles.

The driver, a 64-year-old St. Petersburg man, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

The 24-year-old trooper and the driver of the Ford van were not injured, FHP said.
