The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating after a police pursuit led to a deadly crash in Titusville on Friday night.
FHP said the crash happened shortly after 8 p.m. Friday when a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu driving south on Barna Avenue, approaching Nicklaus Drive, ran off the roadway and struck a palm tree, a fence and then a sign.
Vincent Side, a witness, said, “At first I was going to try help the guys, until I seen the police cruisers stop at the corner right there.”
Troopers said the Chevy was actively fleeing from Titusville Police Department officers, and that law enforcement had deployed stop-sticks against the vehicle before the crash.
“When the police officer got there, he kept screaming, ‘Hands, hands, hands.’ And there was no movement, and then the other officers who showed up had long guns and they didn’t see any movement, and finally, when they got to the car, two of them pulled the door open,” Side said. “They slide him out and they started doing CPR on him.”
The crash was so violent that it cracked a palm tree in half, busted the sign to the apartment complex wide open, and left debris scattered. The Florida Highway Patrol, the law enforcement agency investigating the deadly pursuit, said the man was taken to the hospital but died.
The Chevy’s driver, a 35-year-old Titusville man, was transported to Parrish Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Titusville police have not released any information about their involvement in this incident.
