Train crashes into car in Fort Myers; Father and son escape unharmed

A train crashed into a car in Fort Myers on Marsh Avenue and Edgewood Avenue Monday morning, leaving a father and son unharmed despite the car being pushed into a ditch.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m. as Juan Perez was driving his 10-year-old son to school. Perez said there was no indication a train was coming because the railroad gate was up.

“Yeah, what happened was [I was] coming from over there, but the railroad gate was not down,” Perez said. “It was not down because if it was, I would’ve had to stop back there, not here, all the way back there and wait for the train to pass. So, no, that gate was not down in line.”

Perez, who has lived in the area for 31 years and drives on the street daily, described the crash as sudden and forceful, pushing the car into a ditch.

“When I felt that we crashed, I turned the steering wheel,” Perez said. “And with that, we got out. We did not get stuck underneath the train. But thanks to God that we did not get stuck under the train and that we spun this way.”

Perez expressed his relief, saying his car is replaceable and that he is glad he and his son are OK.

“No, well, thank God that we are OK, that’s all. We are OK,” Perez said. “The other things, they’re nothing, but what’s important is life. His life and my life. Yes, so thank God we are OK. We will just keep moving forward. Life moves on.”

Perez confirmed that neither he nor his son was injured, though they were shaken by the incident. The road has since been cleared for traffic.
