A Marco Island man is accused of a hit-and-run, which caused an injury after dragging a man on the back of his golf cart following a crash on Dec. 11.
According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a scene on Collier Boulevard in Marco Island regarding a crash with injuries.
Deputies spoke to the victim of the crash, who was being treated for injuries on the scene by Collier County Emergency Medical Services.
The victim said he was riding his e-bike southbound on North Collier Boulevard and passed the area of Esplanade when a man driving a golf cart screamed at him to get out of the road.
According to CCSO, the victim pulled off to the right at the next road, Tigertail Court, and let the golf cart pass him. He then continued riding his e-bike southbound on North Collier Boulevard and eventually caught up to the golf cart.
The victim then attempted to take a photo of the golf cart’s license plate, but as he was doing that, the driver of the golf cart slammed on the brakes and intentionally “brake-checked” the victim, going from 30 mph to 0 mph, CCSO said.
The e-bike then rear-ended the golf cart, and the victim was thrown onto the back of the golf cart with his legs dangling on the ground. The golf cart driver then continued to drive, dragging the victim for 50-100 yards, CCSO said.
A witness at the scene said he saw what looked like something falling off the back of the golf cart and yelled to the driver, who waved him off, CCSO said.
Deputies used the photo of the golf cart’s license plate to identify the driver as S P, 61.
Deputies attempted to contact P at his home, but he did not answer the door. P then spoke with deputies and said he was out of town and would report to the police station on Dec. 15.
P reported to the station on Monday and was arrested.
He faces a charge of hit-and-run, leaving the scene of a crash involving an injury, which is a felony.
