1 hospitalized, 2 cats rescued in New Smyrna Beach fire

One person and two cats made it out of an apartment fire Wednesday morning in New Smyrna Beach, firefighters said.

Crews responding to the 800 block of Maralyn Avenue reported heavy flames from a two-story residential apartment building and a quick knockdown of the fire.

The person who survived the fire had self-extricated and was taken to the hospital, the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department said on social media.

The two cats that were rescued from the fire were treated at the scene, the post states.

Photos and videos shared by the fire department show the flames, as well as how far away the smoke could be seen and shots of one of the cats being held as it receives oxygen.
