Davie police officer opens fire after fleeing driver hits him, authorities say

A Davie police officer fired at a driver who hit him while fleeing a traffic stop overnight Monday, officials said.

According to the Davie Police Department, officers responded to the area of Davie Reese roads at around midnight after receiving reports of a vehicle with a stolen license plate.

A DPD spokesperson said as officers approached the vehicle, the driver “quickly accelerated in an attempt to flee,” striking the officer, who then fired at the vehicle.

Officers and Broward County deputies pursued the vehicle and stopped it on Florida’s Turnpike near Hollywood Boulevard, taking two suspects into custody, authorities said; a third fled and was taken into custody a short time later.

None of the suspects was hit by the gunfire. Meanwhile, police said the injured officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities said the officer has been placed on paid leave as they investigate the shooting, per standard protocol.
