88-year-old man killed in single-vehicle crash in Volusia County, troopers say

An 88-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Volusia County on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened at US-1 and South Nova Road around 1:17 p.m.

According to a crash report, a Ford Fusion was traveling north on U.S. 1, south of South Nova Road, in the inside lane when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled off the road to the left, causing the rear bumper to strike a ditch.

Troopers said the vehicle continued to travel north and off the road again to the right when the front windshield struck a tree branch.

As the Ford continued, it then struck a utility pole and entered the woodline, according to the report.

The driver, identified as an 88-year-old New Smyrna Beach Man, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The crash remains under investigation.
