Miami-Dade deputy in critical condition after Turnpike crash in Doral: ‘We need your prayers’

A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy was seriously injured Saturday morning in a crash on the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike between Northwest 41st and 58th streets, authorities confirmed.

MDSO Assistant Sheriff Eric Garcia said the deputy, who has been in law enforcement for 20 years and with MDSO for six, was on duty en route to work when he responded to a traffic-related call to help a trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol that involved an entrapment at around 7 a.m.

He said the crash involved a sedan, whose driver remained at the scene.

Following the crash, the deputy was airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, underwent surgery, and remains in critical condition. Garcia said he his staff are “cautiously hopeful” that the deputy will pull through.

Out of respect for the deputy’s family, MDSO has not released his age or identity. Garcia asked the community for prayers for his recovery and thanked hospital staff, sheriff’s office personnel, and fire rescue for their response.

Authorities said traffic on the Turnpike was affected after the southbound lanes near Northwest 74th Street were shut down. They announced that all lanes were reopened at 3:30 p.m.

Garcia also had a safety warning for drivers.

“We cannot stress enough how important it is to our motorists, when they’re driving and they’re approaching a traffic scene, to slow down and to move over in order to prevent these types of incidents,” he said.

No other details about the crash were immediately released.
