95-year-old crashes into police car on Christmas day

On Christmas day, a 95-year-old man ran a red light and drove against traffic before crashing into a police car, according to a police report.

95-year-old Ronald Erickson was traveling northbound when he failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of U.S. 41 and South Sumter Crossing Boulevard, according to the North Port Police Department (NPPD).

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle using lights and sirens, but Erickson continued driving and crossed into the southbound lane.

Oncoming traffic was able to avoid the wrong-way vehicle.

Police were able to pass Erickson’s car and block it from traveling farther. His vehicle then collided with a police vehicle, causing minimal damage to both cars.

Erickson was cited for a stoplight violation and for driving in the wrong lane of travel.

He was transported to his home following the incident and has been requested to have his driver’s license reexamined.
