A man was killed and another was wounded in a shooting early Tuesday morning in Florida City, police said.
Florida City police said officers responded around 12:30 a.m. to reports of a shooting near the 1400 block of Northwest Second Avenue. When officers arrived, they found two men suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced one of the men dead at the scene. The second man was taken to a local hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
A friend of the man who was killed told Local 10’s Hannah Yechivi that the victim was well liked and known in the community.
“I went to school with his mom. That’s heartwrenching,” said resident Charlotte Thompson. “It’s a senseless death and we need to stop these senseless killings in the streets Florida City.”
Florida City Commissioner Walter Thompson said he is praying for the families and the victims involved in the shooting.
“This is something that I want none of my citizens to have to go through. You can rest assured that Metro Dade and the Florida City Police Department will investigate and get the results.”
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives have taken over the investigation. No additional details were released.
Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
