A speeding motorcyclist who initially eluded Polk County sheriff’s deputies was easily captured after his motorcycle caught fire, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.
In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s office said a deputy observed a motorcycle Jan. 30 going 130 mph in a 65 mph zone on I-4 near Davenport.
The pursuit, however, was short-lived. “Based on the motorcyclist’s recklessness and other circumstances, the deputy chose to disengage,” the social media post said.
A short time later, dispatchers received a call about a motorcycle on fire on I-4, just a few miles down the road.
“The deputy responded to the scene, and found the black Honda to be extra crispy. The operator of the bike was uninjured, but that was probably the last good thing about his evening,” the sheriff’s office said.
The motorcyclist was identified as 19-year old NTH of Orlando. “Mr. Haines was arrested and taken to (Sheriff) Grady Judd’s Bed & Breakfast where he was charged with: Fleeing to Elude, Dangerous Excessive Speeding, and Reckless Driving. He was also cited for not having a tag on the motorcycle. Now he has no tag AND no motorcycle,” the Facebook post said.
As of Monday morning, H was in the Polk County Jail under $20,000 bond.
