House fire near E. Mack Bayou Road damages Santa Rosa Beach home

House fire near E. Mack Bayou Road damages Santa Rosa Beach home

Firefighters from South Walton Fire District (SWFD) responded Monday afternoon to a house fire in Santa Rosa Beach near E. Mack Bayou Road.

Crews arrived to find heavy fire engulfing the home’s garage and immediately started working to put it out.

Firefighters searched the house for anyone inside and began ventilating the garage roof to get it under control.

The fire was knocked down around 1:30 p.m., SWFD said.

Firefighters kept working for another hour to overhaul the structure and extinguish hot spots.

According to SWFD, one person inside the home was evaluated for smoke inhalation and taken to a local hospital for additional care.

One animal was initially rescued but later died.

The fire caused heavy damage throughout the home.

According to fire investigators, a space heater could not be ruled out as the cause of the fire.

Firefighters said it is important to remember these guidelines when using portable heaters:

  • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.
  • Place heaters on flat, solid surfaces.
  • Turn space heaters off before leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Keep children and pets away from all heating equipment and cords.
  • Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets. Do not use an extension cord.
