A man died Sunday night after the side-by-side he was riding in hit an SUV on Fort Caroline Road and flipped, ejecting all six adults, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
JSO Sgt. Rob Hungerford with the Traffic Homicide Unit said the crash was reported around 10 p.m. Sunday on Fort Caroline Road at Eveross Road, less than a half-mile northwest of I-295.
Hungerford said the four men and two women, who were riding westbound on Fort Caroline Road in the side-by-side, are all in their early 20s.
At one point, the side-by-side utility vehicle hit the back of a Ford Escape, which was being driven by a woman in her late 40s.
The collision caused the side-by-side to flip, ejecting all six adults.
Jacksonville Fire and Rescue personnel took them all to the hospital, where one of the men died. Another man was listed in critical condition.
Police did not share the extent of the injuries to the other four adults on the side-by-side, and it’s unclear if the woman in the SUV was hurt.
Hungerford said this marks the 20th traffic fatality in Duval County this year.
The crash remains under investigation.
