Five people were taken to the hospital Monday afternoon after a major crash on U.S. 41 in Hernando County.

The crash happened just before 4:30 p.m., south of Southern Hills Boulevard, and involved three vehicles, according to Hernando County Fire Rescue.

Firefighters said they arrived to find multiple injured patients. Photos from the scene showed the three damaged vehicles, one of which had its hood torn off and front windshield shattered.

A pickup truck was left sitting in the grass beside the highway, and the airbags were deployed. Officials said at least one of the vehicles rolled over during the crash.

A helicopter landed on the highway to fly one of the injured patients to a local trauma center. The rest were transported by ambulance, and two were listed as trauma alerts.

The cause of the crash was under investigation Monday, and no further information was immediately available.
