A dog died and two residents were taken to the hospital as trauma alerts after a house fire early Thursday in Ocala, authorities said.
Ocala Fire Rescue crews were dispatched shortly after 1 a.m. to the 2300 block of SW Fourth Street after a neighbor reported a fire.
A police officer already at the scene told firefighters the home was fully engulfed and that one resident had suffered burns. The officer helped the injured resident away from the house and used a garden hose in an effort to control the flames, officials said.
When firefighters arrived, flames were pouring from a living room window. A second resident was located outside, and both residents told responders their dog was still inside the home, according to Ocala Fire Rescue.
Battalion Chief 11 took command and directed operations as firefighters went inside to attack the fire. Crews knocked down the blaze within seven minutes of arrival, officials said. Ventilation and checks for hot spots followed.
Both residents were transported to a hospital with burn and inhalation injuries, Ocala Fire Rescue said. The dog died at the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Ocala Fire Rescue’s Prevention Division.
