Woman killed in hit-and-run on I-95, lanes reopen after several hours

LAKE WORTH, Fla. (CBS12) — A woman was struck and killed early Friday morning in a crash that shut down all northbound lanes of I-95 near Lake Worth.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash was reported shortly after 3 a.m., when a body was discovered in the roadway near Exit 64, 10th Avenue North, causing a large emergency response and a full closure of the interstate. A CBS12 employee driving to work called 911 after spotting debris and seeing the victim lying in the right lane.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol crash report, the woman— an unidentified Black woman — was standing or walking in the outside center lane of northbound I-95, about 100 feet south of the 10th Avenue North overpass, when a northbound vehicle failed to see her and struck her. The driver did not stop. A witness reported seeing a small four-door sedan hit the woman but could not provide a more detailed description.

After the initial impact, she was run over by additional vehicles. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to FHP.

Troopers attempted to identify her using RapidID, but were unsuccessful. She had no identification or visible tattoos. Her fingerprints are being processed by the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Traffic cameras in the area were taken offline while investigators documented the scene. The closure causes traffic backups during the early morning commute. FHP said that the interstate remained closed for several hours, reopening at 7:12 a.m.

Initial traffic alerts described the crash as involving a tractor-trailer and labeled it a major traffic incident, causing significant backups for morning commuters forced off the highway at the 10th Avenue North exit. FHP later clarified that the vehicle that struck the woman remains unknown.
