A semi truck driver died after rear-ending another semi that was hauling large pieces of timber near Lakeland on Wednesday.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the victim, 44-year-old Gabriel Lorenzo Beauford, was following behind a Mack truck hauling timber on US 98 just before 11 a.m.
The Mack truck began to slow down; however, investigators said it appeared that Beauford didn’t realize it and struck the load of timber protruding from the rear of the Mack truck’s trailer.
Large pieces of timber pierced the cab of Beauford’s truck, as well as the trailer and cargo within the trailer, according to deputies.
Due to the crash, some hazardous material spilled at the scene.
Polk County Fire Rescue, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Transportation, and Polk County Road Maintenance went to the scene to clean up the spill.
The road was closed for seven hours.
The sheriff’s office said the timber-hauling truck was in compliance with all safety measures regarding its cargo.
Deputies said no criminal or civil charges are anticipated.
