A Florida man lost his life after his truck collided with a load of tree timber protruding from a semi-truck.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said that on Wednesday, deputies responded to the scene at approximately 10:50 a.m. on US 98 North, just ten miles north of Lakeland, where they discovered 44-year-old Gabriel Lorenzo Beauford of Winter Park deceased in the cab of his 2008 Volvo semi-tractor.
According to officials, Beauford’s truck was traveling southbound, following closely behind the Mack truck that was preparing to make a left turn onto State Road 471, loaded with timber.
The report states that he failed to notice the slowing truck ahead of him. As a result, Beauford’s vehicle struck the protruding timber, leading to a penetration of his cab and trailer, which ultimately spilled hazardous materials onto the roadway.
The driver of the Mack truck, a 34-year-old man from Ocala, emerged unscathed from the wreckage, per officials.
Efforts to manage the aftermath involved multiple agencies, including Polk County Fire Rescue, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the Department of Transportation, which worked to clean up the hazardous scene.
Authorities confirmed that the Mack truck was compliant with all necessary safety measures for transporting its cargo. Officials say they do not anticipate any criminal or civil charges as the investigation continues.
