First responders were called on Thursday afternoon after a train “clipped” a Sumter County school bus, according to the district superintendent.

In a statement, Superintendent Logan Brown said that it was only the back of the bus was struck by the train, and he went out to the scene himself shortly after it happened.

“I am grateful to report that there were no reported injuries to any students or staff,” he wrote. “Student safety is our top priority, and we are incredibly thankful that everyone is safe.”

Brown added that administrators from South Sumter Middle School and South Sumter High School responded to the scene and helped connect students to their parents.

Deputies told News 6 that the incident happened at East Central Avenue and North Market Street in Bushnell, prompting all railroad crossings in the city to shut down except for the one at Belt Avenue.

As a result, deputies warned drivers to expect delays and use alternate routes if possible.
