A 17-year-old male pedestrian from Daytona Beach was critically injured after being struck by an SUV on Interstate 95 near Bellevue Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred at mile marker 261 when the pedestrian entered the northbound lanes of I-95 from the right shoulder, traveling west across the right and middle lanes, FHP said.
The front right side of the 2007 Ford Explorer struck the pedestrian, causing him to veer backward into the middle lane and impact the pavement, troopers said.
According to FHP, a witness explained that the pedestrian darted across the roadway, and the vehicle couldn’t stop in time to avoid the collision.
A second witness told FHP he saw the pedestrian “fly up” after colliding with the vehicle. He then stopped to check on the pedestrian and provided a blanket.
The teen was transported to the Halifax Daytona in critical condition.
The driver of the SUV, a 63-year-old female from South Daytona Beach, was not transported and remained on the scene.
