A deadly crash on one of Tampa Bay’s most-traveled bridges temporarily shut down all northbound lanes and sent the southbound lanes into near-complete gridlock.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a crash on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge just before 1 p.m. on Easter Sunday.
According to FHP, the driver of a Spyder three-wheeled motorcycle took “evasive action to avoid a collision with an unknown vehicle,” and lost control of the motorcycle.
Traveling to the shoulder, the motorcycle hit the outside guardrail and was redirected and stopped in the outside northbound lane, at which point the rider was thrown.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
All northbound lanes were closed until 5:17 p.m., and drivers on the southbound lanes were struggling through heavy traffic.
