Three women charged in Waffle House seat dispute that sent diner to hospital

Three Wildwood women have been arrested for their involvement in a seat dispute at Waffle House that erupted in a brawl, ultimately sending a customer to the hospital.

Four women, three of whom have been identified as 21-year-old A.G, 20-year-old B.R and 20-year-old J, walked into Waffle House, located at 7954 NE Eighth Way, Wildwood, around 2:05 a.m., March 9, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The group came in with raised voices and shouted across the dining room as a man got up from his chair at the counter to smoke a cigarette outside. One of the women then took his seat, which he announced was his when he came back inside. This started a loud verbal altercation between him and the women, the report said.

The man ultimately paid his bill and left as the women continued to yell and scream at him. A few minutes later, four more men arrived at the restaurant, two of whom became involved in a riot later on, the report said.

During the altercation with the man, a female customer came to Waffle House with a group of her own. She sat at the counter by herself, but she mistook W for an old friend. She apologized for the mix-up, only for R to say she owed the customer for a previous physical encounter that law enforcement did not know about, the report said.

Fearing another fight, the customer left the restaurant in such a rush that she left her phone and car keys on the counter. The group, including all eight women and men, aggressively followed her out to the parking lot. She proceeded to push R in self-defense in an attempt to get away from the people threatening her, the report said.

At that point, the customer’s group got out of their vehicle to help her, and a large brawl began between both parties. The riot ended with the group of women and the group of men getting into their separate vehicles to flee on State Road 44. The customer was taken to the hospital with severe injuries, with her defenders sustaining superficial injuries, the report said.

The entire altercation was filmed on internal and external surveillance cameras. It caused “fear and terror” for the Waffle House staff and customers who were still inside, unable to leave due to the staff locking the front door while notifying law enforcement. Warrants were sought for all involved in the riot, the report said.

G was found and arrested on Sunday afternoon. She was charged with riot with imminent injury to person or damage to property and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. She was released after posting $2,000 bond.

R and W were arrested Friday evening and booked on the same charge at the detention center. They were also released after posting their respective $2,000 bonds.
