2 triathlon bicyclists hospitalized after collision with vehicle in Palm Beach County

Two bicyclists competing in the BillBone Olympic Triathlon were hospitalized after a crash with a vehicle, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday night.

The triathlon, which took place in the morning, included a 40-kilometer bike ride, as well as swimming and running events at Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach. It was run by Bill Bone, who co-founded BillBone Law Group

The two bicyclists were injured while competing along the route, PBSO spokeswoman Teri Barbera told WPBF.

Ashleigh Whitton, 45, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, suffered serious injuries and Miguel Junior Gomez, 46, of Oakland Park, had injuries that were listed by PBSO as minor.

They were taken to local hospitals, PBSO said.

At 8:58 a.m., Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and PBSO responded to the crash at Forest Hill Boulevard and Pinehurst Drive.

A 2025 Hyundai Tucson, driven by a 74-year-old Boynton Beach man, was traveling northbound across Forest Hill Boulevard at the intersection of Pinehurst Drive, attempting to enter a park, PBSO said in a crash report.

Both bicyclists were traveling westbound on Forest Hill Boulevard within the outside lane, which had been closed to vehicular traffic for the triathlon.

The driver and bicyclists “did not identify” each other “until the crash was unavoidable,” according to the crash report.

The bicyclists crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle.

The driver, who was wearing a seat belt and no drugs/alcohol were listed, had minor injuries.
