Sixteen people were forced out of their homes Sunday night after a fire broke out inside a triplex in Lauderhill, first responders confirmed.
Residents were seen returning to the property, looking inside and asking firefighters if any of their belongings were still there.
The American Red Cross is helping those displaced find shelter.
Lauderhill Fire Rescue officials said the fire started around 7:30 p.m. in the 5700 block of Northwest 15th Street.
No one was hurt.
A long line of Lauderhill Fire Rescue engines stretched across the scene, with Lauderhill police also responding.
Neighbors gathered outside, watching as crews worked. One man who lives two doors down said the fire was hard to miss.
“It was dark. It had a certain smell, like (an) electrical scent,” the man, identified only as Maxwell, said. “Black smoke. Maybe about 10 to 15 feet.”
It’s still unclear how the fire started, and the cause remains under investigation.
