LAKE COUNTY, Fla. —
An 82-year-old man was arrested after he was accused of fatally beating his wife with a hammer, according to an arrest affidavit.
Groveland Police Department officers received a call around 9 p.m. April 19 regarding a well-being check at a home on Way Point Drive, which quickly escalated into a gruesome discovery.
Upon arriving at the home, officers located V D seated on a couch covered with what appeared to be blood.
Police said he had visible self-inflicted cuts on both of his arms. He was taken to Orlando Health South Lake Hospital for evaluation and treatment before being questioned.
The officer then proceeded to enter the bedroom, where he located D 84-year-old wife lying in bed with a hammer next to her.
The victim was covered in blood, and so were the bedroom walls and ceiling, according to the arrest affidavit.
The medical examiner’s office determined that D wife had died more than 24 hours before her body was found. She was observed to have a “large impact wound” on the side of her head.
During the investigation, dried blood was found in the sink and on the floor leading to the bathroom.
Bloody items were also found in the kitchen trash can and near the sink area, according to the affidavit.
Police officers also learned that D had made comments about a possible suicide pact involving pills about a month before the incident.
It was also revealed that he had attempted to cut his wrist with a knife before authorities arrived at the scene.
Based on the evidence, police believe that D killed his wife by inflicting trauma to her head with a hammer.
Neighbors described the older couple as quiet and said they were shocked by what happened.
He is facing a first-degree murder charge and is being held in the Lake County jail, according to police.
