A dog almost died after it found itself caught in a commercial structure on Thursday.
The St. Lucie County Fire District says firefighters responded to the blaze at about 10:35 a.m. near Sunrise Boulevard and Virginia Avenue.
When crews arrived at the scene, they encountered heavy smoke coming from the structure and initiated an aggressive fire attack while conducting searches and evacuating the building, the fire department says.
SLCFD firefighters were able to confine the fire to the place of origin and prevent further extension within the building.
One person was taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, and the dog was found using a thermal imaging camera. Emergency care for the dog was given at the scene until it began breathing again.
