A wrong-way crash on Florida’s Turnpike in Indian River County killed a Fort Pierce woman and injured several others, including a 3-year-old in critical condition, FHP says.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol say the crash happened around 10:05 p.m. near Mile Marker 173.5 in the northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike.
According to investigators, a 2025 Kia K4 driven by the Fort Pierce woman was traveling south in the northbound inside lane when it collided head-on with a 2023 Chrysler Pacifica traveling north.
The impact caused the Kia to veer into the grassy median, where it came to rest facing south. The Chrysler spun into the outside lane and struck a 2017 GMC Canyon traveling beside it before coming to a stop in the inside lane, troopers said.
The driver of the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene by St. Lucie County Fire Rescue.
A 5-year-old boy in the Kia suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while a 3-year-old boy was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to FHP.
The driver of the Chrysler, a 22-year-old Margate man, and three passengers from Royal Palm Beach suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital.
The driver and one passenger in the GMC were not injured. Another passenger suffered minor injuries.
The crash shut down the northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike for several hours overnight before reopening around 6:15 a.m. Sunday.
The investigation is ongoing, and CBS12 News will provide updates as they are made available.
