Teen critically injured after electric scooter, pickup truck collide in Orlando, FHP says

A 13-year-old on an electric scooter is in critical condition after a crash with a pickup truck in Orlando on Sunday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The teen was heading to a store to buy flowers for his mom, to celebrate Mother’s Day.

The collision happened near the intersection of Savannah Pines Drive, near the State Road 417 toll road in South Lake Nona.

According to FHP, the pickup truck was traveling east on Moss Park Road, and then the boy on the scooter was crossing the street right in front of the Methodist Church when he was hit.

“It’s very tragic,” Tyler Embry told WESH 2 News while standing along Moss Park Road Tuesday afternoon.

His family is close to the family of a 13-year-old boy.

“He’s in bad shape, and his family is there right now,” Embry said. “The worst thing was that he didn’t wear a helmet, and he didn’t have any broken bones on him. It’s just that he hit his head so hard on the ground.”

Another friend of the teen’s family provided WESH 2 News with a photograph of the crash scene, showing that the impact had split the scooter into two pieces.

FHP said the driver of the pickup truck is a 53-year-old who was not transported and remained on scene.

Troopers say the pickup driver did stop and render aid, and likely will not be charged or ticketed. Embry says, “It’s just really sad that it had to happen to him.”

WESH 2 News has obtained the name of the 13-year-old through family friends, but is not releasing it until confirmed by the teen’s family or FHP.
